Myrtle Beach Roofer: Preparing Your Roof For Summer

With the weather warming up and the city of Myrtle Beach becoming more crowded, that can only mean one thing…summer is coming! As always, we had a pretty mild Winter and and up & down Spring. The handful of hail storms that rolled through the Grand Strand caused some damage, but sometimes you don’t realize it until it’s too late. That’s why your favorite Myrtle Beach roofer, Carolina Custom Contractors, is here to help you spot the signs that your roof may need some repairing before taking on the sun’s UV rays this summer.

Start With Your Shingles

Your shingles are the easiest thing to examine on your roof. Granted, we don’t have to worry about snow here in the Carolinas (except maybe 12 hours of it), but wind and hail can take a toll. Once you get onto your roof, take your time to examine each one. Keep an eye out for any curling or deteriorating. Obviously look out for ones that may be missing some pieces.

If your shingles are curling, then there’s a good chance they will in fact break off during the next wind storm or hurricane, which will create gaps in your roof. If your shingles are deteriorating, the granules will begin to rub off which renders the shingle almost useless if enough are lost. At that point, leaks can happen and then all hell can break loose.

The Sky(light) Is The Limit

If your shingles all check out, you will want to inspect your skylights (or sky tunnels) next. Make sure the seal is still strong in the place where the window attaches to the roof. Ensure that there are no leaks in the window itself.

Keep Your Mind In The Gutter

Your gutters are the third and final thing to inspect before the summer months. Check for clogged, leaky or loose gutters. If the drainage hole at the top of your gutter at your roof line is clogged, you could experience flooded gutters which can cost you a lot of money in repairs. If you have leaks or they are loose, the water will drop down immediately as opposed to doing down the gutter and disposing where it should.
