Fall Home Improvement Tips
With the summer of 2018 now just a memory, it’s time to focus on the biggest investment in your life…your home. I’m sure over the past few months you let a few things slip through the cracks with the “I’ll take care of it later” mentality. Well, that time is now! Now that the weather has cooled off and it’s not absolutely unbearable outside, you have no more excuses. Here are a few fall home improvement tips to consider when going through your checklist:
Replace/Repair Your Roof
You might as well start with the “roof over your head”! The Grand Strand of Myrtle Beach went through two hurricanes this year, which means your roof most likely experienced some kind of damage. Start by replacing any loose or missing shingles. If you do not feel comfortable accomplishing this task, call a licensed contractor like Carolina Custom Contractors to come and give you a professional opinion. They will be able to not only replace your shingles, but also make other suggestions as to what needs to be done.
Clean Out Your Gutters & Downspouts
With all of the debris whipping through the air from the tropical storm winds that we have gone through over the past few months, there’s a good chance a lot of it ender up either on your roof or in your gutters. Leaves, twigs, branches, pine straw, dirt and other debris collect in your gutters, causing rain water to not be able to properly move through your downspouts. Grab a ladder, a pair of gloves and get to work. We suggest working with a partner to help move the process along and for safety sake.
Repair Driveway & Walkway Cracks
Small cracks in your driveway can quickly become large cracks. You can prevent this with 5 items: bucket of filler, caulking gun, shop vacuum, hammer and chisel. It may seem like a pain, but it’s actually quite simple. If this is unfamiliar territory for you, look up some videos on YouTube or call a local professional.
Check Your HVAC Unit & Change Air Filters
Our fall and winter weather is pretty mild compared to up north, so it really doesn’t get too cold. With that being said, there are definitely long stretches of time when we kick on the heat. Before doing so, make sure your unit is prepared for the switch. Clean out any debris in and around your outside unit. Replace your air filters once a month to ensure proper air flow. It’s silly to spend more on your monthly electric bill just because the unit is overworked due to dirty filters.
Fall is a wonderful season here in Myrtle Beach, so be sure to enjoy it to the fullest! If there is anything that we can do for you, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
